A National Insurance (NI) number is a unique reference that tracks the tax and National Insurance you pay. You need it to work legally, to make sure you are taxed at the right rate, and to build entitlement to things like the State Pension.
Do I already have one?
If you came to the UK on a visa, your NI number may already be printed on your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP), or linked to your digital immigration status. Check there first, you may not need to apply at all.
Can I start work before it arrives?
Yes. You are allowed to start a job before your NI number comes through, as long as you can prove you have the right to work. Tell your employer you have applied, and give them the number as soon as you receive it.
How to apply (step-by-step)
- Apply online through the official GOV.UK National Insurance number service. It is free, never pay a third party that claims to "get" you a number.
- Prove your identity. You may be able to do this digitally, or be asked to send documents such as your passport or BRP.
- Submit and wait. You will get a confirmation, then your number by letter, usually within a few weeks.
Beware of scams: applying is completely free on GOV.UK. Anyone charging a fee to "apply on your behalf" or asking for payment by gift card is not official.
What documents you'll need
- Your passport or national identity card.
- Your BRP or proof of immigration status, if you have one.
- A UK address and contact details.
Common questions
How long does it take?
Often a few weeks from application to receiving your number, though it can vary. Apply as soon as you are settled so it is ready when you start work.
Is my NI number the same as my tax code?
No. Your NI number stays with you for life; your tax code can change depending on your income and circumstances.
What if I lose my number?
You can find it in the HMRC app, on a payslip, or by asking HMRC, you do not need to apply again.
